NEVERLAND. The traditional matte painting done for Hook is definitely one of those shots that made me want to work in films, at ILM, and more specifically in matte painting, and I wanted to do a remake of it with my own little twist, at least try..
I started it 6 months ago, working a little bit on it every now and then with both 3D and 2D, but I decided to do one last push this weekend to complete it. I was planning to work on it a lot longer to be honest, but time is running out right now so I'm leaving it at that !
With the rise of AI, I can't help but to think it's interesting to think for a second about the process of doing this vs how it was done back in the day. I'm not hiding the fact I can't paint this completely by hand on glass like it was done back in the day, yet the digital and CG put out of a job a lot of people in the 90's and early 2000's. Is the AI generated art just the next step ? If it is and if this kind of image can be generated with a few words, I'm very conflicted. I love to push every pixel but I love the final idea too, and yet I also want to make a living doing art and creating.
Anyway it still was an absolute pleasure to create it, for no other purpose than self enjoyment and escapism, hope you like it.
Original by Yusei Uesugi . All props to him, and all the other amazing traditional matte painters who created those iconic shots. Can Netflix or Disney make a documentary about those people? That would be great.
Here is an article about the original shot :
